Acting Deputy Director Darryl S. Volpicelli
Effective October 24, 2024, Darryl S. Volpicelli assumed the role of Acting Deputy Director of the U.S. Secret Service. As Acting Deputy Director, he manages the Secret Service’s protective and investigative operations. Additionally, Mr. Volpicelli leads the agency’s operational support functions through its Office of Training, Office of Professional Responsibility, and the Office of Communication and Media Relations. Mr. Volpicelli oversees seven operational directorates comprised of over 7,000 law enforcement officers and administrative, professional, and technical personnel.
Mr. Volpicelli concurrently serves as the Assistant Director of the Office of Intergovernmental and Legislative Affairs, where he leads the Secret Service’s Congressional Affairs Program, Homeland Security Program, Liaison Division, Freedom of Information Office, and Privacy Office. As the head of the Office of Intergovernmental and Legislative Affairs, Mr. Volpicelli advances Secret Service legislative priorities with Congressional leadership; coordinates operations and policy with the Department of Homeland Security; and serves as a liaison between the Secret Service and other government entities. Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Volpicelli served as the Deputy Assistant Director of the Office of Intergovernmental and Legislative Affairs (2023 – 2024).
Previously, Mr. Volpicelli served as the Special Agent in Charge of the Presidential Protective Division (2022 – 2023). As Special Agent in Charge, he was responsible for the safety and security of the President, First Family, and the White House Complex. Mr. Volpicelli served as the primary Secret Service representative to the First Family and senior White House officials. In furtherance of his duties, Mr. Volpicelli successfully led more than 1,200 special agents and uniformed division officers supporting Presidential protection and White House security operations. In 2023, Mr. Volpicelli successfully coordinated security efforts and accompanied President Biden on his unprecedented rail trip to Kyiv, Ukraine. Mr. Volpicelli received his SES appointment in 2021 while serving as the Deputy Special Agent in Charge of the Presidential Protective Division, where he directly managed all Presidential protective operations, policies, staffing, and technical systems integration on the White House Complex.
Throughout Mr. Volpicelli’s 24-year career, he has held leadership positions in both protective operations and investigations. He has served as the Deputy Special Agent in Charge of the Miami Field Office, where he oversaw all investigative and protective operations throughout South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. He coordinated investigative operations throughout the South Florida region, as well as protective operations at Former President Trump’s Mar-A-Lago resort.
Mr. Volpicelli was an Inspector in the Office of Professional Responsibility’s Inspection Division, where he directed both compliance and misconduct investigations. He managed technology programs enhancing White House security as the Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Office of Protective Operations. Mr. Volpicelli previously held the position of the Assistant to the Special Agent in Charge of the Airspace Security Program, where he directed security operations and countermeasure development to defend against aviation threats to the White House and the President.
Mr. Volpicelli joined the Secret Service in 2000 as a member of the New York Field Office. He is a native of Groton, NY and earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and sociology from Bucknell University. He also received a professional certificate in executive leadership from American University’s Key Executive Leadership Program in 2018.
