(Washington, D.C.) – On July 11, 2017, Ager Hasan, Canadian homicide suspect, was arrested
during a traffic stop by Secret Service agents and Task Force officers in San Antonio, Texas.
Hasan’s arrest resulted from a counterfeit investigation conducted by special agents from the
San Antonio Field Office.

On July 11, 2017, the San Antonio Field Office received a routine duty call from an
anonymous source who reported an individual (later identified as Hasan) was placing orders
for counterfeit currency via the Dark Web. The source provided the suspect’s description, first
name, address, and vehicle information. Special Agents and Task Force Officers responded to
the address provided by the source to conduct surveillance, during which time they observed
the reported vehicle driving by the individual’s address. Agents and officers arranged to have a
San Antonio marked police unit conduct a traffic stop of the suspect vehicle.

During the traffic stop, it was discovered the vehicle’s license plates were stolen out of
Arkansas. An individual fitting the description given by the anonymous source was located in
the front passenger seat. Agents and Officers interviewed the individual and positively
identified him as Ager Hasan. Hasan was subsequently arrested for an outstanding provisional
warrant for murder out of Ontario, Canada. Incident to the arrest, a search of Hasan’s vehicle
and residence revealed he was in possession of approximately $600 in counterfeit $20 Federal
Reserve notes.

Agents contacted the San Antonio U.S. Marshals Service, who confirmed an outstanding U.S.
federal warrant in conjunction with the outstanding Canadian warrant. Hasan was transported
by Agents and Task Force Officers to the federal detention center where he was processed.
Due to the outstanding warrant for second degree murder out of Canada, no U.S. federal
counterfeit charges were pursued. Hasan is expected to appear in a Texas courtroom today to
be remanded on the basis of the outstanding provisional warrant for second degree murder.

The murder investigation began with the stabbing death of Melinda Vasilije on April 28, 2017,
in Kitchener, Canada. The investigation immediately focused on Hasan who is from Hamilton,
Canada. Throughout the investigation, Canadian authorities were in contact with Hasan
encouraging him to turn himself in to U.S. law enforcement officials.

Hasan was spotted in Pennsylvania and again in Tennessee on May 20, 2017, where it was
believed he was headed to the Mexican border. Prior to Hasan’s arrest in San Antonio,
Canadian investigators had been working with U.S. state and local law enforcement officials,
Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Homeland Security on this case.
