On June 20th, 2014, the United States Secret Service Lima Resident Office supported the Peruvian National Police (PNP) arrest of Pedro Sosa Inca Casana on charges of manufacturing millions of dollars of counterfeit U.S. currency. Following Casana’s arrest, authorities seized $4.5 million in counterfeit U.S. currency, a commercial grade off-set printing press, uncut reams of paper with the $100 U.S. Federal Reserve Note watermark, and other paraphernalia from a store in Lima, Peru that served as a front for the counterfeiting operation.
“This investigation addresses the continuing economic threats to our country and illustrates how well established law enforcement networks work together to disrupt international organized crime each day,” said Secret Service Director Julia Pierson.
The PNP and the United States Secret Service Lima Resident Office began investigating Casana in May 2013. He is being charged under Peruvian Law with manufacturing a foreign obligation with the intent to distribute. To date, the Secret Service Lima Resident Office and Secret Service Miami Field Office have supported PNP operations to suppress eight counterfeit plants associated with this particular counterfeit $100 U.S. Federal Reserve Note.
Since October 2012, the Secret Service has supported the PNP in the seizure of over $23 million in counterfeit U.S. currency in Peru and the arrest of 41 Peruvian nationals.
This case continues pending further investigation and judicial action.
