About the United States Secret Service
The United States Secret Service was originally founded in 1865 for the purpose of suppressing the counterfeiting of U.S. currency. Now widely known for its protective
mission in safeguarding the nation’s highest elected officials, visiting foreign dignitaries, and events of national significance, the Secret Service maintains a unique dual mission as
one of the premier law enforcement organizations charged with investigating financial crimes.

The investigative mission of the agency is focused on enforcement of federal law involving identity theft, computer fraud, credit card fraud, bank fraud and counterfeiting
of U.S. currency. Recent initiatives include the expansion of the Secret Service’s Electronic Crimes Task Forces. These groups focus on cyber and financial crimes in
specific communities by creating partnerships with the private sector, academia and with other law enforcement agencies.
