WASHINGTON – The 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games in the greater Los Angeles area have been designated a National Special Security Event by the Secretary of Homeland Security.
The Olympics will take place in July 2028 and the Paralympics will follow in August. This marks the furthest in advance that a National Special Security Event designation has been granted.
While the official National Special Security Event designation was made in late January, the formal planning process began on June 12 with the first meeting of the Executive Steering Committee. The Executive Steering Committee is made up of senior representatives from federal, state and local law enforcement and public safety partners.
“The security planning for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be a huge undertaking that will require close coordination between law enforcement and public safety partners at all levels,” said Brian Lewin, Special Agent in Charge, U.S. Secret Service Los Angeles Field Office. “We are already working diligently to ensure that the games, though years away, will be secure for all athletes, attendees, and the public.”
A National Special Security Event designation is based in part on the event’s significance, size, and attendees. This allows for significant resources from the federal government, as well as from state and local partners, to be utilized in a comprehensive security plan. When an event is designated a National Special Security Event, the U.S. Secret Service assumes its mandated role as the lead agency for the design and implementation of the operational security plan.
