Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO)
Discrimination Complaint Process
The United States Secret Service (Secret Service) is required to establish procedures for administering the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) discrimination complaint process in accordance with Title VII, Title 29 of the Code of Federal Regulations (C.F.R.) Part 1614, and the EEOC’s Management Directive (MD-110).
Any employee, former employee, or applicant for employment who feels that they have been subjected to discrimination or harassment based on their race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy and sexual orientation), national origin, age (40 and over), disability (physical or mental), genetic information, parental status, pregnancy accommodation, or reprisal for participation in protected EEO activity may utilize the complaints process outlined in29 CFR § 1614 and MD-110.
The individual who alleges discrimination, also known as an aggrieved person, must contact an Equal Employment Specialist within 45 calendar days of the alleged discriminatory incident; in the case of a personnel action, within 45 calendar days of the effective date of the action; or in the case of discriminatory harassment, within 45 calendar days of the most recent event.
To discuss the process, your options, or alternate processes to address your issues please contact an Equal Employment Specialist at (202) 406-5540.
Accommodations
Disability and Pregnancy
It is the policy of the Secret Service to provide reasonable accommodations to all employees or applicants for employment with a qualified disability or pregnancy-related medical condition, within the defined scope and limitations of the law. Reasonable accommodation should be provided to qualified persons with disabilities or pregnancy-related medical conditions, unless doing so poses an undue hardship to the Agency or, in the case of disabilities, may be a direct threat to the requester or other employees. It is important to understand that the Agency does not have to provide the accommodation the employee or applicant wants, so long as the Agency provides an effective reasonable accommodation. If more than one accommodation effectively meets the disability-related needs, the Agency may choose which one to provide.
Reasonable accommodations are changes or adjustments to a work environment that permit a qualified applicant or employee with a disability, pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions to participate in the job application process, to perform the essential functions of a job, and to enjoy the benefits and privileges of employment equal to those enjoyed by employees without disabilities or an otherwise qualifying medical condition. Reasonable accommodations may include acquiring or modifying equipment or devices; job restructuring; part-time or modified work schedules; adjusting or modifying examinations, training materials, or policies; providing readers and interpreters; making the workplace readily accessible to and usable by persons with disabilities; and, as a last resort, reassignment to a vacant position. Unlike reasonable accommodations under the Rehabilitation Act, reasonable accommodations under the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) can also include temporary suspension of essential functions.
If you need information on the Secret Service’s process, please send an email to the Disability Program Manager (DPM) at RARequest@usss.dhs.gov.
If you are an applicant for employment, please notify the Talent Management Division, the Law Enforcement Acquisition Division Human Resources Specialist, or the Hiring Official processing the job opportunity announcement. Alternatively, you may contact the DPM at RARequest@usss.dhs.gov.
Religious
The Secret Service is required to make reasonable religious accommodations for an applicant or employee whose sincerely held religious belief, practice, or observance conflicts with a work requirement, unless providing the accommodation would create an undue hardship for the employer. The law aims to prevent individuals from being forced to choose between their religious convictions and practices and their job. Requests for religious-based accommodation must be submitted in writing.
If you need information on the Secret Service’s religious accommodations process, please send an email to the Disability Program Manager (DPM) at RARequest@usss.dhs.gov.
If you are an applicant for employment, please notify the Talent Management Division (ATM), the Law Enforcement Acquisition Division (LED) Human Resources Specialist, or Hiring Official processing the job opportunity announcement.
