Did you know the United States Secret Service protects the Earth too? The James J. Maloney Canine Training Center at the James J. Rowley Training Center was recently awarded certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). It has features such as treating stormwater at the source, low flow plumbing fixtures, sensors to determine if someone is in a room, efficient windows and insulation, minimization of construction waste, and use of recycled products in some of the building materials.
LEED certification is an internationally recognized green building certification system, providing third-party verification that a building was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across several metrics including energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts. Green buildings also cost less to operate. They use fewer resources like water and energy and generate less waste, leading to decreased utility costs.
